Brand Spotlight: Comme des Garçons Play

by Boys'Co Online

January 05, 2016

We recently received a new shipment of the highly sought after Comme des Garçons PLAY line and decided to dedicate this post to the brands history and new arrivals. Most of the styles will look familiar, however PLAY has released a new golden rendition of it's original logo which can be found on some of the classic pieces. We've included a visual guide of a lot of the styles we received and assembled outfits to give you an idea of how to rock it.

Comme des Garçons is a Japanese clothing brand, founded and run by Rey Kawakubo and her husband Adrian Joffe. The company presents its main collections during Paris Fashion Week and Paris Men's Fashion Week. The Comme des Garçons flagship store is located in Tokoy's prestigious high fashion district Aoyama. It also operates several concept stores in Kyoto, Osaka, and Fukuoka.

The companies origins date back to 1969, however Rei Kawakubo did not establish the company Comme des Garçons Co. Ltd. until 1973. Comme des Garçons did not have a menswear line until it was added in 1978 following its success in the 70s. The company made its debut show in Paris shortly after in 1981. Every Comme des Garçons collection is designed in their studio in Aoyama, Tokyo and then produced predominantly in Japan and also in France, Spain, and Turkey.

The Comme des Garçons diffusion line "PLAY" was launched in 2002. The PLAY line aims to create beautiful wardrobe basics through the use of patterns as well as minimalistic designs and fabrication. The highly recognizable hearth-shaped logo can be found throughout this diffusion line on pieces such as their t-shirts, knits, and even their collaborative footwear collection with Converse. The deceivingly simple yet memorable logo was originally designed by New York artist Filip Pagowski. According to Filip, the idea of a red heart with a set of eyes popped into his head with no connection or affiliation to anything and his first draft became what we all know as PLAY's logo. The logo was initially submitted for a different Comme des Garçons project for which it never made the cut, but it was eventually released as the centre image of the PLAY line, becoming even bigger than anyone would've anticipated.

New Styles

Pictured above are several new styles of Comme des Garçons PLAY which feature a golden version of the heart logo. The golden rendition of the logo can be found on several of the knit pieces, as well as the basic t-shirts.

Our new shipment of Comme des Garçons PLAY includes a large selection of their t-shirts, knitwear, polo shirts, and sweatshirts. We've compiled a couple outfit ideas with our new arrivals to give you an idea of how to wear the new PLAY gear. The Comme des Garçons PLAY line is very versatile, allowing you to go completely casual with their t-shirts and hoodies, but it also offers the opportunity to dress more conservative with their knits and cardigans. Take a look below for some of those outfit ideas. We also have a couple of their collaborative footwear with Converse left in stock here

Look #1

The first look combines items from the collection to create a laid back look. The classic PLAY t-shirt and cream coloured hoodie are staple basics from the collection. These versatile items can virtually look great with most outfits. We've decided to combine the items with a pair of NEUW Denim Iggy Skinny in the Ramblin wash. Nothing beats a clean white t-shirt matched with a pair of well fitting pants, making this a great everyday look.

We emphasized on the cream tones of the hoodie by adding accessories by Herschel Supply as well as a Briston watch. The wallet is the Herschel Roy Wallet which comes in a brindle beige colour way. The featured Briston Clubmaster watch comes in a matte tortoise shell housing and a khaki nato strap to match the rest of the look. The look is finalized with a pair of PLAY x Converse Pro Leather High Top Sneakers in Cream

Look #2

For the second look we've combined a shirt with the Comme des Garçons PLAY cardigan for a more sophisticated look. The subtle red accents in the shoes and accessories go along nicely with the general tones of this outfit. The shirt is the Zanerobe Box Seven Foot Short Sleeve Shirt. We skipped on the jeans and decided to go with a pair of Scotch & Soda Chinos in Black. The sneakers featured in this outfit are the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star 70 low tops in white. The Converse sneakers are a little more casual, but with the right outfit, can look really good. In this case, the casual low tops add a touch of playfulness to the otherwise more formal outfit.

The look is accessorized with a Boss Racing Watch. We decided to go with this watch due to its red stitching on the strap which compliments the tones of the cardigan and the converse.

Look #3

For the third look we've chosen the PLAY long sleeve striped shirt as the centrepiece and combined it with laid back items from Zanerobe, Herschel Supply, and more. The timeless striped long sleeve is assembled with a pair of the Zanerobe Slingshot Denimo Jeans. The look is accessorized with the Herschel Supply Clark Messenger Bag and the Daniel Wellington Classic Canterbury Watch

Due to the Zanerobe's elastic cuffs on the denim, this look can be finished off with a pair of clean sneakers. We recommend going with a pair of high or low top Converse or a pair of People Footwear shoes.

We hope that this post inspired you to try out some new outfits with Comme des Garçons PLAY line. The line is currently available at all four of our retail locations and will become available online later this week.
