You know it’s officially Fall when you start thinking about additional clothing accessories to keep you warm. Your best friends this fall will be a pair of gloves and a proper scarf. A lot of men still keep their distance from this accessory for the fear of not pulling it off properly. This section of our style guide will show you exactly what to look for when shopping for a scarf, as well as give you some advice on how to pull it off so you won’t be left out in the cold this season.

One of the most important factors when buying a scarf is to invest into one that you can comfortably wear over and over again. What we mean by this is that you should buy one that comes in a nice and safe colour, which will work with most of your wardrobe. You’ll want this scarf to be functional first (especially if it’s your first scarf), and fashionable second. That being said, it’s possible to find one that hits both marks.

Finding the Right Size

The perfect scarf will be anywhere between 16-30cm (6-12 inches) wide and 140-80cm (55-70 inches) in length. This is considered an ideal range since it will give you plenty of fabric to try out different tying methods without looking like you’re swimming in your scarf.

Choosing the Right Fabric

Since we talked about the importance of functionality when it comes to buying a scarf, you’ll generally want to invest in something that’s made from wool. A wool scarf will be your best bet in terms of keeping your neck warm this season. The only downside is that wool scarves can become itchy after some wear so in case you have sensitive skin, we’d suggest investing in a cashmere scarf. Your neck will thank us later.

Hands down the easiest way to wear a scarf. Simply hang the scarf around your neck and you’re done! This method is great if you’re going for a laid back look. Keep in mind that this will keep the front of your neck exposed so try a different method if you're looking for warmth.

Another simple way to wear a scarf this season is the once around. Start with the drape but leave one side hanging lower than the other. Then simply wrap the longer side around your neck. This method still looks effortless with the added benefit of giving your neck all around protection.

This type of knot is inspired by the ascot knot which people associate with ties. This type of knot has a very formal feel to it and will definitely keep the cold wind out. Start by draping your scarf over your neck. Cross both ends over each other and thread under and over.

If there is any one of these knots that you should remember, it is this one. The Parisian knot is the best and most stylish way in our opinion and should be your go-to approach. Take your scarf and fold it in half. Drape the folded scarf around your neck and thread the loose ends through the loop, adjusting the tightness to your preference.
