It is without a doubt that one of the biggest trends of the decade is athleisure. Unfamiliar with the term? Athleisure refers to the incorporation of athletic wear into modern fashion. From high fashion down to streetwear, everyone has hopped on this trend at one point or another.

Today we are going to focus on one big aspect of athleisure, which is to wear your running shoes outside of the gym. It is not uncommon these days to walk around and see almost everyone going about their day in a pair of runners. This has not always been the way. Pairing runners with jeans used to be frowned upon (and still is by some), however with today's modern and sleek running shoes, there has never been a better time to incorporate a pair into your daily wardrobe. 

The first step in pulling off running shoes outside of the gym is finding the right pants. Stay away from boot-cut and any other wide leg opening pants at all cost. The goal here is to already have a well fitting outfit, thus making it easier to add a pair of runners without having them stick out.

The runners are often used to create a form of duality within your outfit such as mixing a smart casual upper half and athletic lower half. Although you can wear runners with a wide range of pant styles, we recommend sticking to joggers and jeans until you become more comfortable with the style. 

 

Good Examples of Runners and Jeans

When it comes to pulling off runners with jeans, it's all about the fit. In order to pull this look off, we recommend wearing slim or skinny fit jeans which taper down your leg. Slimmer leg openings will be more flattering as they wont overlap your runners. 

Light washes are perfect for the spring and summertime and generally look great with most colours. Matching the colours of your runners with your t-shirt or jacket is a great example of a cohesive outfit.

  • Wear slim jeans for best result. baggy jeans with big leg openings will throw off the silhouette.
  • Light-washed denim works best with white or cream coloured runners.
  • Experiment with distressed jeans for a streetwear-friendly look

 

How to wear Runners with Joggers

Another great combination is pairing your running shoes with a pair of joggers. Most joggers these days already come in a slim or skinny fit, so make sure the pair you're picking up fits your body well. Jogger pants are great at drawing peoples eyes towards your footwear, so coordinating your colours becomes especially important.

Consider wearing your favourite runners with a pair of french terry or workout joggers. This combo allows for you easily transition into a workout with ease.

  • Make sure the jogger pants aren't too baggy or skinny. Getting the fit right is differentiation between a good outfit and a bad.
  • Try making a bold statement with a monochromatic outfit and wearing contrasting runners
  • Wearing athletic joggers means an easy transition into the gym.

 

 

How to Wear Runners with Pants

Once you get comfortable pairing your runners with jeans and joggers, try giving other types of pants a shot. Although twill pants and runners may not sound like an appealing combo, with the right fit and right shoes you can rock this look.

  • Don't be afraid to have the hem stop above the shoe to expose your ankles
