How To Transition Your Wardrobe From Summer To Fall

by Boys'Co Online

August 27, 2018

It may feel like a daunting task to change up your wardrobe for fall, but if you choose the right transitional pieces, it doesn't have to be a chore to put away all your summer clothes and dig out your toasty fall/winter garb.

What are transitional pieces?  These are certain garments of clothing that are suitable for multiple seasons, possessing features that work well for multiple climates/temperatures.  Often the weight of fabric and the colour/tone will be important for a transitional piece.  A bright green would be great for summer, but a poor choice for fall.  An olive green, on the other hand, works in the summer, but transitions easily into the fall months.  We will cover fabric weight, colour, and shape of the best transitional pieces for fall below.

Tees - T-shirts are definitely a year-round staple, but you won't be too happy to be wearing a paper thin tee when the chilly fall days come to stay.  Transitional tees are thicker weight tees that are completely opaque (you can't see through), and usually most comfortable in breathable cotton.  Stick with neutral tones of black, white, grey, navy, olive, tan, and trending colours of bright yellow, raspberry, and purple.

Long Sleeve Tees - rolled up long sleeve tees are a favourite for the summer grunge look, but they're also great transitional pieces for fall.  Just like their short-sleeve counterparts, look for a thicker opaque cotton variety when looking for a good transitional long-sleeve tee.  The same colours as short-sleeve tees also apply here.

Cotton Sweaters - whether it be a waffle knit or plain, cotton sweaters are great for those cooler summer days.  They also work perfectly for chill fall days, so don't pack up these pieces just yet.  As for colours, white, cream, navy, olive, and bright yellow will all work well for fall.

Jeans - all your regular and lightly distressed denim will transition perfectly into fall; just avoid the large distress holes, as the colder days are not very forgiving on bare skin.  Stick with medium to dark blues, dark greys, and black denim for fall.  Super bleached and light coloured denim are not as suitable.

Track Pants - a huge trend that is carrying forward into fall are the slim legged track pants.  Easy to match, and a perfect medium weight, your track pants will keep you comfortable well into fall.  Black and white track pants are our go-tos, but if you want to rock yellow, red, or navy variations, they can work too!

Sweatshirts, Hoodies, and Sweatpants - the streetwear vibes are still trending, so keep wearing your sweat tops and bottoms right into fall.  Just like tees, bright yellow, raspberry, and purple are the trending colours for fall, and neutral white, black, and grey will also work.

Light water-resistant coach jackets/bombers - fall means rain, and chilly winds, and your coach and flight bombers will be of use here.  Although you may think that these jackets are a little too thin for fall, these are easily layered over a sweatshirt/hoodie to up the warmth level.  Stick with neutral colours of black, navy, grey, and olive, but burgundy, camouflage, and bright yellow colourways will also look great for fall.

Chelsea boots - Those suede chelsea boots that you were rocking for summer will continue looking great for fall.  Whether it be tan, olive, beige, brown, or black, they will work great for fall as well.  You can either waterproof them with Jason Markk Repel for fall, or keep them to drier days only.

Sneakers - this goes without saying: sneakers are pretty much multiseasonal by definition.  Primeknit, flyknit, and similar fabrications may leave your toes a bit chilly for fall, but most of us just wear thicker socks.  That being said, solid fabrics (with no holes) will be much warmer.  Bright yellow, olive, navy, red, all-black, and all-white are your trending fall footwear colours, but with sneakers its all about creativity, so don't let that limit your kick choices.

Now that you know what to look for, start collecting your transitional pieces for fall, and if you have any holes in your collection, you can be sure to find awesome menswear fashion at all Boys'Co Retail Stores!
