Movember Focus: Interview with SAXX Movember Campaign Model: Braedan Ralla

by Boys'Co Online

December 07, 2017

Boys'Co is proud to be a partner with SAXX for Movember 2017 to raise awareness towards men's' mental/physical health.  Movember Foundation helps fund research for men's health by raising money/awareness.  The organization has created a community for any individual to make a difference.  Men can grow a moustache to help raise awareness, or start their own fundraising campaigns to help bring more donations to benefit men's health.

The Boys'Co Robson store window was been taken over by SAXX to raise awareness for men's physical health for a full week in Movember.  Braeden Ralla from Purpose Juice Co. will proudly model SAXX Movember underwear (and nothing else) for our Movember campaign, and his story is written on our store windows.  We sat down with Braeden to ask him a few questions about his story, and what he is doing to make a difference for men's health!

Q: Tell us your story and how you became involved with SAXX and the Movember Foundation?

Braeden Ralla: This past June, I opened Purpose Smoothie Co, a smoothie and health food store located in Steveston Village in Richmond. I have an egg and peanut allergy, so breakfast for me has always been very limited. Growing up, I always enjoyed making smoothies as it was one of the few creative breakfasts I could enjoy.

A couple of years ago, my mother was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. As the family searched for more answers we were introduced to holistic medicine by a naturopathic doctor. After that introduction, I began to research superfoods and the healing power of fresh, real foods. So, I started making smoothies for my mother every morning that combined all her holistic supplements and a variety of superfoods into one delicious drink. At the time she was feeling better, but unfortunately, last December she passed away. She was the most positive and inspiring person I have ever met, and truly lived her life with a purpose. Her positive energy and spirit is what inspired the name of my shop and my ultimate goal is to not only help people find their purpose, but also to pursue it.

Q: What are some words of advice you have for men that are going through mental/physical heath issues?

BR: Stay positive and surround yourself with good people. You have to remain positive and believe that there will be light at the end of the tunnel. Surround yourself with family and friends who genuinely care about your wellbeing and can uplift your spirits.

Q: Tell us about some of the initiatives you organize/participate in to help raise awareness/fund research for mental/physical health.

BR: Currently, I am fundraising with Russel Sean Fitness and Lululemon for Movember (on top of being Vancouver's spokesmodel for SAXX Underwear's Movember Initiative). This is the first year I have joined their team, but both RSF and Lululemon have such energetic work environments and staff that I know it will be an awesome month supporting men’s health.

As well, in 2015 my family started a fundraiser, Team Devi, to fundraise money for hard to treat cancers. Team Devi was not just a fundraiser, but also a positive way to show our mother the kind of support she had while battling cancer. Throughout her life my mother was passionate about running and had completed 13 full marathons, over 25 half marathons and had been a run leader for 10 years. During the first year she couldn’t participate or run, we ran the marathon for her. Rallying around my mother’s spirit, we have had the biggest team at the BMO Vancouver Marathon for three years in a row and have raised over $90,000 for cancer research. We will continue to honor my mother’s legacy by fundraising every year, and most importantly to remind people to exercise their privilege of exercising.

Q: Let’s talk prevention. What are some key things men can do to prevent or screen for cancer?

BR: Get your annual check up!

Q: Are there any educational resources you recommend men check out to educate themselves about mental/physical health.

BR: Mental and physical health are essential to living a great lifestyle and often simply improving your diet and eating healthy can have a huge impact on improving your health. Swing by Purpose Smoothie Co and we’d love to chat and educate anyone that’s interested on the importance of eating healthy! (Purpose Smoothie Co is located at 115-3900 Bayview Street in Richmond's Steveston area)

Q: And lastly, a fun question: what is your favourite pair of SAXX Underwear? Which line? Which colour?

BR: Blacksheep Boxer for sure. I rock black boxers, almost everyday.
