In the age of social media, more and more people are becoming better educated on self care and the negative side effects of preservatives, harsh chemicals, and animal byproducts. But, high-performance hair styling/grooming and all-natural formulated products have always been in mutually exclusive categories. Enter O'Douds, a passion project by founder Clayton Douds providing high-performance styling and grooming with natural vegan ingredients.
Clayton's journey began in February 2014, when he wasn't able to find any all-natural hair styling pomades with enough strength/performance. He started brewing his own concoction of pomade as a hobby in his own home, and even started selling it to some people he knew online. From there, demand continued to grow and grow. Fast forward to present day, and O'Douds runs its own on-site small-batch manufacturing facility in Brooklyn, New York, creating a wide array of grooming products from hair styling products and haircare, to soaps, deodorants, and colognes. The name O'Douds comes from Clayton's original last name, which was changed to Douds when his family immigrated from Ireland. To honor his family, Clayton decided to put the O back into O'Douds.
What makes O'Douds different? The brand is through and through all-natural vegan, using a variety of natural vegan ingredients and essential oils, but offering high performance and noticeable results. We speak from experience; we've been burned before with all-natural products that claimed to be amazing, but just didn't perform. We've tried every O'Douds product, and can say without a doubt that these products smell, feel, and perform amazingly. Let's get down to the products.
When asked to choose one hero product within the whole O'Douds line, you'd think founder Clayton Douds would instantly pick out one of his hair pomades. But to our surprise, Clayton picked out the soaps, reasoning that not all men use pomades. The most popular of his soaps is the Forest Soap, which incorporates active charcoal to mildy exfoliate and detoxify the skin (also giving the soap a cool grey black colour). O'Douds' soaps don't use harsh chemicals or cleaning agents that may dry out the skin, but use saponified olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, sweet almond oil, and castor oils to give you a smooth cleansing lather with no dryness. The Forest Soap uses Forest essential oils to give you a woodsy fresh scent that invigorates the senses.
Next on our list are the hair styling products. The four categories that matter most with pomade are the amount of hold, shine-level, longevity, and rinsability.
Let's start with the Multi-purpose Pomade. With a a water based formula and a whipped thick cream texture, the Multi-purpose Pomade provides a customizable light to firm hold with a moderate shine. Use one scoop for a loose light hold, 2 scoops for a medium hold, and 3 scoops for a firm hold. The water-resistant formula gives hair a lasting hold without ever drying to a crunchy finish, so you can easily restyle throughout the day. In terms of rinsibility, it leaves a little build-up after the first shampoo, but a second shampoo rinse usually clears all the product out of your hair. The Multi-purpose Pomade gets its name from the products versatility. It is suitable for most hairstyles ranging from short to long. It gives curls and short spiky hair a piecey definition, but also gives longer hair the ability to slick back, build volume, or texturize. This product is infused with Cedar Citrus essential oils to give you a fresh citrus woodsy scent that is both masculine and refreshing.
The Matte Paste, on the other hand, has a creamy formula that incorporates natural waxes and clays to provide your hair with a great firm hold, but little to no shine. The formula remains restyleable and light, but has great longevity. The best part is that it rinses out of the hair with one shampoo. This product is most suitable for restyleable short hair styles, matte updos, or to texturize longer waves/tresses. But, due to its high amount of hold, this formula is still pretty versatile to use. We just recommend topping with a finishing hair spray if you would like your hairstyle to stay in place for the whole day without needing to restyle. Like the Multi-purpose pomade, the Matte Paste contains Cedar Citrus essential oils to give a fresh masculine scent to your shine-free hairdo.
Traditional styling is not dead, and the Traditional Pomade covers this category. The product provides the classic greasy oil-based strong hold with all-day water-resistant longevity and high shine. This is the hardest to wash out of your hair, but is still easier to rinse out than the traditional pomade recipes. It can provide hair buildup, which some classic pomade connoisseurs know and love. Traditional Pomade is perfect to style those pompadours, slick backs, and side parts, but can also give definition to short curls/waves. The traditional pomade is infused with Bay Rum essential oils, which provide a punch of warm sweet spicy fragrance to your hair.
Standard Pomade gives you the same strong hold as traditional pomade, but with a more pliable/easier to spread formula. It also provides a high shine, and full day longevity, but is a lot easier to rinse out of the hair. This formulation is perfect for those that like the effects of a traditional pomade, but don't like the hard and greasy texture of a traditional pomade formula. Standard Pomade is also scented in Cedar Citrus for a light citrus woodsy aroma.
Emulsified Kaolinite sounds scientific and complicated, but don't let the name turn you off. This spray is like a lightweight natural dry texturizing product for hair, providing scalp cleansing properties without over-drying. Kaolinite clay is used in a lot of texturizing sprays and dry shampoos to lightly cleanse the scalp, strengthen hair, sooth the scalp, treat dandruff, and may also help improve hair growth. This product's lightweight formula doesn't weigh down hair and leaves an airy finish. Let it air dry on hair to get a clean textured style, or blow-dry the product to build maximum volume. This product is great to use before pomade, or on its own. The Kaolinite spray is lightly scented with sandalwood, rose, and coriander essential oils to provide a warm scent to your hair.
One thing that stood out instantly when opening an O'Douds hair product was the scent that filled the air. Unlike typical hair products with strong artificial scents, O'Douds products have a unique but more natural quality to their scents. It turns out that Clayton formulated 4 blends of essential oils to fragrance his products. He also created Solid Colognes & Multipurpose Fragrance Sprays with these 4 blends along with 2 other parfum scents.
